Amplid Milligram + Family

Looking proudly at three generations of the infamously light Amplid Milligram, I’m wondering, can there be many other lucky folk with this particular family collection?

the Short Read…

Huge love for this board. Pricey but worth it. You will only need one board - this board (or maybe three of them!).

Our Rating

5 out of 5.

What we liked …

Rides like a solid, great all-mountain, all-conditons deck, light.

What we didn’t …

I’ve had three generations of these, I’ve little bad to say (except maybe less good for heavier riders + full on park stuff).

Price

1250 to 1400 euro

Amplid Milligram 2023/24

The Grandson - like all decent offspring, a refinement of its parents...

I’ve just received this shiny new Milligram. It’s now mid-January and I’ve not ridden it. Snow was low over the Xmas holidays and I didn’t want to risk gouging the base.

This deck needs no introduction by now - hands down one of the best ever. It’s won all the awards and continues to impress.

Now the snow is dumping here in Europe - so I’m counting the next ten days before I can get back out there to try this bad boy.

The top coating is supposed to be anti-stick so the snow builds up less on top deck. Funky idea, let’s see if it works.

The shape is similar to the previous board, it’s bomber in all conditions. Rides with gorgeous flow and confidence.

What’s super new is the neat holes top and tail, like skis, where the skins fit like a glove. I’m expecting the transitions to be quicker and simpler with this set up.

As you can tell I’m evangelical about these decks. Long live Peter Bauer, keep churning out these beauties. Thank you!

Milligram 2018/19:

The Father - received a few tweaks and improvements from the original. Its shape is wider at the tip and tail. More rocker. Probably a little stiffer - useful on ascents and groomers.

The top has received a harder coating. But the ride vibe is similar though it’s wider edges allow for deeper carving arcs.

With two of these Amplid’s in my quiver, I decide it’s time to sell my much loved Burton Dominant. I don’t find the splitboards lose much for all mountain Freeride use, and the occasional park action.

It wouldn’t be a full report unless I tell you how my pal Andy broke his Milligram clean in two back country in Georgia! He weighs 90kg though, vs my 68kg! We reported it and Amplid sent him out a new deck. He’d lost faith though and went back to his Jones Solution. (So, yeah, maybe these aren’t for the heaviest of riders - jury’s still out).

The Milligram 2014/15:

The Grandaddy - first generation Amplid Lab carbon splitboard. I will never forget my first day on this stealth deck. There’d been a six week arctic storm blasting the Troll Fjord, North Iceland. As we transitioned the splitboards to downhill, our gear was super close to blowing away. It’s fair to say we started off a little terrified, this was as unfriendly as it gets up there.

Proper cold blasted me and my two friends. Powder lay in gullies, but other areas of the mountain were stripped bare revealing pure ice. This was not the fantasy I’d dreamt of for my first ascent or descent on this brand-spankers board.

It was wild and raw. Ice and mountains and flint ocean. But here I am. It’s awesome. I feel anxious and under confident but as we took our first few turns, the Milligram tells me I belong here, everything’s fine.

As the deck travelled thru powder it floats beautifully, and when it hits boilerplate ice, it cuts an edge giving me security.

It rides like it knows where to go and how to respond. I fall in love immediately - and have been ever since that cold, cold day.

I still ride this deck, and it’s still awesome.
